Research:

My research interests revolve around the different aspects of the surface and interfacial properties,e.g. adhesion, friction, wear, and lubrication of nano- and micro- electromechanical systems (N/MEMS). My work mainly involves materials characterization, surface modification and treatment, development of new methods to fabricate MEMS, and the use of an array of scanning probe and surface-sensitive analytical techniques to achieve my research goals. Some of the projects I am currently working on as part of the Center on Interfacial Engineering for Microelectromechanical Systems (CIEMS) include investigation of the:

1. Nanotribology of novel MEMS devices and test structures, e.g. characterization of adhesive forces in the in-house fabricated doubly clamped cantilevers as a function of device and process parameters.

2. Fundamental surface properties of metal-based structural materials and coatings, e.g. Ti, W, Ni, and Al - alternative to established Si-based MEMS processes.

3. Reliability issues in MEMS device from a surface science perspective, e.g. corrosion in poly-Si and SiC structural materials and coatings.

4. Development of scanning probe nanolithographic techniques on Si substrates using AFM/EFM with potential applications in nanoelectronic and nanomechanical devices.
